Since 2008, the Bija Children's Choir has supported local women & children in need. And now, adolescent girls' education programs worldwide.
“We tell [her] story not because it is unique, but because it is not. It is the story of so many girls.”
BIJA VOICES: SEE UPON YOUR PATH is a recording/performance project of the Bija Treble & Select Choirs with special guests, designed to educate audiences about the significant barriers that adolescent girls face worldwide in accessing quality education. In doing so, we aim to raise awareness and funding for opportunities that can help all girls lead self-determined, empowered lives, contributing to a healthy world.
Reasons Behind It:
The project director Maria Ana Bija is recording artist who is passionate about girls & women’s rights, and wanted to create something meaningful and artistic that would help this cause. Also, since girls and women make up the large majority of her youth choral program, she wanted to offer her students a platform for using their voices in a relevant, socially-impactful way. The fact is that over 100 million adolescent girls in developing countries are not in school-- the results of which affect girls and women at the worldwide level.
Founded in 2013, the Malala Fund champions every girl’s right to 12 years of free, safe, quality education, believing that girls are the best investment in the future peace and prosperity of our world. And in 2015 Michelle Obama created a global initiative called “Let Girls Learn” to address this issue: “In many countries, girls face complex physical, cultural, and financial barriers in accessing education. As a girl grows older the fight to get an education becomes even harder. Her family must be willing to pay school fees. She may have a long, unsafe walk to school. She may be forced to marry. And she often lacks the support she needs to learn. Yet, we know that educating girls transforms lives, families, communities and entire countries. Educated girls lead healthier and more productive lives. They gain the skills, knowledge and confidence to break the cycle of poverty and help strengthen their societies. It’s time to Let Girls Learn.” - https://letgirlslearn.gov/ & malala.org
Our EP album of treble voice songs represent different cultures, artistically speaking to young women worldwide, such as Voix Sur Ton Chemin (See Upon Your Path), Garbe Rame (Dancing with Gourds), Dreamkeeper, and others. SEE UPON YOUR PATH will be released online in August 2018, available at live performances, with each song accompanied by a girl or woman’s true story. Through our raising awareness and funds where 100% of proceeds go to organizations such as The Malala Fund & Let Girls Learn, this creative project’s underlying mission is to ensure that all girls have access to education that they deserve, and in doing so, improve the health of our world community as a whole.
