DESCRIPTION OF CLASSES:

Preparatory Choir:  Open to 7-12 yr olds without audition, the Bija Preparatory Choir is a beginning level choir class that focuses on creating a beautiful unison sound and developing basic rhythmic abilities, music literacy skills, and performance composure.  Through singing multicultural repertoire and learning music literacy through the movement-based approach of Dalcroze Eurhythmics, students learn the basics of choir singing in an enjoyable way, and perform for their families at the end of a session, or as past of an all-choir event.

Concert Choir:  Open to 8-14 yr olds by audition or invitation, the Bija Concert Choir is an intermediate level chorus, focusing on developing technique, literacy, and vitality in ensemble performance.  Students work towards a free-flowing vocal sound in two and three-part songs, sometimes including dance.  Music literacy activities begin with moving and listening, and then become conceptualized as students apply new skills to multicultural repertoire.  Concert Choir students perform at least three times a year, including the annual Bija Cultural Story Concerts each spring.    To schedule an audition for the Concert Choir, please contact mariabija@gmail.com or call (707) 695-6865.

Concert Choir Select:  The most capable and experienced of the Concert Choir students are selected to stay for an extended weekly rehearsal in order to refine harmonies and blend, and occasionally learn additional special repertoire to perform.

Treble Choir is for ages 13-18 by audition or invitation, performing advanced-intermediate classic choral and world music arrangements for community benefit events and special projects.  Music theory through Dalcroze Eurhythmics and Solfege are incorporated into rehearsals, and studio recordings and travel tours are also in the forecast for future seasons.

Please email mariabija@gmail.com for questions about placement or auditions for Concert and Treble Choirs.

FOR YOUNGER CHILDREN:  Junior Rhythmics Choir.  When offered in the season schedule, the Bija Junior Rhythmics choir is a joyful music and movement class for 5-6yr olds without audition as an introduction to the choral setting. Students develop listening skills through music & movement games, learn elements of beginning music notation, experience choral ensemble singing and an awareness of breath and tone quality. Juniors may either be asked to participate in choir-wide events or perform for their families for "Parents Day" on the last day of class.  Since it is a specialty class, sessions of Junior Rhythmics Choir are offered based upon the availability of the instructor.
